Polymer Research Technologies takes top prize at BCIC-New Ventures Competition
Clean tech startup Polymer Research Technologies, which developed a waste recycling system, took the top prize at Thursday night’s annual competition for new British Columbia companies. Polymer Research claimed the top prize, $130,000, from a group of 178 applicants in the 11th annual B.C. Innovation Council – New Ventures Competition.

Polymer Research Tech Industries, a polyurethane rechecking company, won $130,000 in the British Columbia innovation Council's New Ventures Competition. "The New Venture B.C. competition was really an honour," said Kambiz Taheri, founder and CEO of the company. "The competition was tight. . . . Metro wants mattresses put to rest

Metro Vancouver wants purchasers of mattresses and large furniture to pay an upfront disposal fee on such items to help municipalities deal with the problem of illegal dumping.
The number of abandoned mattresses and boxsprings in lanes and on residential curbs soared after Metro banned mattresses from local dumps in January 2011 and imposed a $20 recycling fee on each item, municipal officials said.
Surrey, for example, saw the number of dumped mattresses jump from about 10 per week to 80 per week shortly after the ban was introduced.

Part of an $80 billion industry, polyurethane foam is used in insulation panels for construction, the automotive industry for seats and seals, and in bedding, carpets, furniture and shoes.
